Heavy oder was? - March 2005
(added: 8-03-05)

COMPLEX 7 have crushed and destroyed the misconception that amazing musicians cannot write catchy songs that display musicianship and skill. The ‘Progressive’ elements are still there (awkward and/or complex riffs, time signature changes, an apparent Jazz influence (Vicious Circle has a break in the middle of the song)), but not overdone to the point of sheer indulgence. Songs are the main focus of the band, most being in the Thrash/Power Metal vein, with the aforementioned Progressive characteristics, and it makes for an interesting release. You could say that COMPLEX 7 is what EIDOLON would be if they decided to let loose. (...)

Metal March

"Process" is actually their third release, after their Demo "Soliloquy" (1995) and the debut album "Water" (2001). Well I haven't heard their previous work, but the first thing I notice in this band is how can they still be unsigned if they exist since 1990 and show this much quality? Anyway, that's not up for me to find out, I'm just here to hear the album and tell you a little something about it. They present us with a very professional album here, even though Progressive Metal is not my favourite kind of metal, I gotta tell you I'm impressed! All the guys here are doing a very good job because they all use their instruments quite well, and that's not a surprise since the time they have been playing together. I specially enjoy Arne Schuppner's guitars here, great intros like the ones in "Vicious Circle" is something you don't hear everyday! And talking about "Vicious Circle", this song has a Jazz part during the middle which shows a little sample of the originality of the band. I also like the drums but sometimes I get the feeling that Guido Schneider is enjoying himself playing so much that a couple of parts don't quite fit what we hear from the other instruments. But this doesn't affect his quality, far from it! The drums are very important in a Progressive band and there's no doubt that he's up for it. Norbert Vornam's vocals are also very good and are just what the this band needed, so it was very important for all when he joined in 1999. Well, there's only missing bass player Björn Müller. People often don't pay all that attention to bass parts because most of the time they just pass you by, but just hear it on the song "Interactive", listen carefully and notice how important and great it is!

The band is coming out of Germany and right from the start it's obvious that this is a quality band, because their CD has a big sound/crystal clear production, good high pitched vocal work and basically this COMPLEX 7 is playing a good deal of pure Progressive Metal. There are clearly influences from FATES WARNING and QUEENSRYCHE here, and with a big groovy guitarsound and no keyboards, this band sounds a bit rawer (the lead vocals, but the choruses are very melodic) and rougher than most other progmetalbands. Nevertheless, this is very good stuff and especially songs like "Trust", "Toadstool" and "Like I was" (best song, very strong chorus) are good complex progressive metaltunes. I haven't heard their first CD 'Water' from 2001, but I can easily recommend this 2nd CD 'Process' of COMPLEX 7 to the fans of complex Progmetal.

(...) Two undoubtedly best songs here (apart from 'Tired') are 'Vicious Circle', with its coquetry with jazz, and 'Nightbirds' that I can't exactly describe, but is a great progressive tune anyhow. (...) Complex 7 bought me with the intensity of the songs, diversity of the influences and sheer excellence of the song structures.

Complex7 is the future hope of the German scene which works in a progressive heavy-metal of big invoice and which delivers us here a real bomb in term of production. Compositions of a very high level with magnificent tunes, Complex7 has absolutely everything to seduce. A band which holds the comparison to all the big current formings and which it will be necessary to distrust in the future. Direct, effective and precise, the alchime is following tangible.
